Sekhmet — whose name in ancient Kemetic translates as “the Powerful One” — is the lioness-headed goddess of both healing and destruction. She is the patron of warriors and physicians simultaneously. What is most often missed about Sekhmet is her role as the primary healing deity of ancient Kemet. The duality was not accidental — it was the principle. Her priests, the wab Sekhmet, were the first medical doctors in recorded human history. They practiced surgery, pharmacology, and spiritual medicine under her authority. Their healing power was understood to come precisely from their connection to Sekhmet’s destructive capacity — to heal effectively, you must have the force to destroy disease. The same fire that wounds can heal. She is the goddess who was sent to destroy, and stayed to heal.
