Independence Day Afrocentric ☥ Whose Freedom Are We Celebrating?

Frederick Douglass asked it in 1852: “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” The question hasn’t been fully answered. July 4, 1776 declared independence for some — but Harriet Tubman was still leading the Underground Railroad in 1863. Haiti earned its independence in 1804 through blood and ancestral fire — 28 years before the United States abolished slavery in any territory, and 61 years before Juneteenth. Juneteenth 1865 was 89 years after July 4. Afrocentric consciousness holds all of this simultaneously.

The Kemetic cosmological framework does not compartmentalize history into national holidays. Ma’at — cosmic order, divine balance — operates across all of human time. What happened in 1776 and 1865 and 1804 are not separate events to be celebrated or mourned on separate dates. They are expressions of the same cosmic principle: Isfet (chaos, oppression) cannot sustain itself against Ma’at indefinitely. Every liberation, every uprising, every declaration, every Harriet Tubman crossing is Ma’at asserting itself through human history. The question is not whether you celebrate July 4. The question is what you are actually celebrating when you do.

The afrocentric consciousness does not boycott the holiday. We expand it. We hold 1776 inside a larger frame — one that includes 3000 BCE Kemet, 1804 Haiti, 1865 Galveston, and the unfinished arc of a people whose ancestors built civilizations that the entire Western world borrowed from.
