Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 as a pan-African cultural holiday grounded in seven principles called the Nguzo Saba. It runs December 26 through January 1 — a week of candlelighting, libation, community gathering, and deliberate practice of African-centered values. The seven principles are: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

Each principle has a direct Kemetic parallel that predates the Swahili names by thousands of years. Umoja maps to Ma’at’s cosmic order — the principle that everything in right relationship creates a functioning whole. Imani maps to Isis’s unwavering sekhem — the life force that gathered every piece of Osiris without evidence that the work would succeed.

Kwanzaa runs December 26–January 1 — it falls squarely within Peret season ☥ (Nov 9–Mar 9), the Kemetic growing season.
